Why WooCommerce?

Imagine being able to launch your online store this weekend, without spending hundreds of euros on monthly subscriptions, and without relying on a platform that charges you a commission on every sale. That's exactly what WooCommerce offers.

This free WordPress extension now powers over 5 million stores worldwide. From artisans selling their creations from their workshops to brands generating millions of euros in sales, WooCommerce adapts to every project. Jenny's handmade soap store runs on WooCommerce. So does the 15,000-item auto parts retailer.

What sets WooCommerce apart from platforms like Shopify or Wix is its freedom. You own your data, you choose your hosting provider, and you can customize absolutely every aspect of your store. No commission on sales, no features locked behind a premium subscription. You install the extension, you configure, you sell.

The other major advantage is the ecosystem. Thousands of extensions exist to add functionality : subscriptions, reservations, multi-seller marketplaces, loyalty points. If you can imagine it, there's probably an extension to do it. And if it doesn't exist, a developer can create it, because the code is open (as in Open source).

Process overview 🔺

Launching a WooCommerce store isn't the obstacle course some people imagine. In fact, you can have a store up and running in an afternoon. The process can be broken down into four distinct stages, each perfectly manageable even without a technical background.

The first step is to install WordPress and WooCommerce, then configure the basic settings. You'll define your currency, country, and units of measurement. You'll also create the essential pages that WooCommerce generates automatically: the shopping cart, the order page, and the customer account. Count on one to two hours for this phase, more if you're starting from scratch with hosting.

Then comes the exciting part: creating your first product, configuring payment methods and defining your shipping zones. This is where your store comes to life. At the end of this stage, you'll technically be able to receive orders. Please allow one to two hours for this too.

The third phase concerns the often overlooked but essential aspects: legal notices, automatic emails, the complete purchasing tunnel. You'll test each stage of the customer journey to ensure everything's working properly. One hour is usually enough.

Finally, before announcing your store to the world, you'll complete a thorough checklist. Real payment tests, SEO verification, backup, security, performance. This last half-hour will save you many a cold sweat after the launch.

What you'll learn 🔺

This guide is designed to make you self-sufficient. You don't need to know how to code, and you don't need to have created a website before. If you know how to use a computer and send an e-mail, you've got the skills you need.

Over the course of the chapters, you'll learn how to install and configure WooCommerce on your hosting, create different types of products to suit your needs (simple products, products with variations such as sizes and colors, downloadable products), and set up the payment methods your customers expect.

You'll discover how to set up delivery zones with automatic charge calculation, a point often a source of confusion for beginners. You'll learn how to personalize the emails your customers receive at each stage of their order. You'll understand the basics of SEO so Google can find your store. And you'll put in place the necessary protections to secure your customers' data and comply with GDPR.

At the end of this course, you'll have a functional, secure store that's ready to receive your first orders. You'll know exactly where to click to modify a product, process an order or adjust your shipping rates.

Technical requirements 🔺

Before you get started, there are a few things you'll need to know. Don't worry if you don't have everything yet: the Installation section will guide you through it.

The most important thing you'll need is web hosting with WordPress installed. Hosting providers such as Kinsta and Hostinger offer packages from $5 per month, often with WordPress pre-installed in a click. You'll also need a domain name, the web address your customers will type in to find you. Most hosting companies offer this for the first year.

A professional e-mail address like contact@yourstore.com inspires more trust than a personal Gmail address. This is also the address that will receive order notifications. On the administrative side, you'll need a business bank account to receive payments.

Allow two to three hours to follow this guide without interruption. Ideally, you should set aside half a day, with coffee at hand and notifications deactivated.

To speed things up on the big day, prepare a few photos of your products in advance, even if taken with a smartphone. Write short descriptions for three to five products. If you have a logo, keep it handy. And if you already have your terms and conditions and privacy policy, that's even better.

In a nutshell

WooCommerce is the free, flexible e-commerce solution that powers over 5 million stores worldwide. The launch takes place in four progressive stages: basic installation and configuration, creation of your first products with payments and delivery, setting up legal aspects and emails, and then final validation before the big day. No technical skills required. With WordPress hosting and a few hours to spare, you can have your store up and running this weekend.
