WooCommerce SEO optimization
Improve the Google ranking of your online WooCommerce store to attract massive free organic traffic.
In this chapter :

Key statistic - 53% of e-commerce traffic comes from free organic SEO. 75% of clicks go to the first 3 results. Being #1 on Google is a traffic jackpot.
SEO Fundamentals
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a set of techniques for ranking higher in Google search results.
Why SEO?
Free traffic - Advertising costs between €1 and €3 per click. SEO generates endless free clicks once you're well positioned.
Qualified traffic - A search for "buy women's running shoes" reveals strong buying intent. SEO targets this intention.
Long-term - When advertising stops, traffic stops. SEO builds a lasting asset.
Maximum ROI - Initial investment (content, optimizations) generates results for years.
53% of e-commerce traffic comes from SEO. If you ignore SEO, you're ignoring half the market.
How Google works
- Crawl - The Googlebot visits pages, follows links and discovers content.
- Indexing - Content is analyzed and stored in the Google index.
- Ranking - The algorithm ranks pages by relevance for each query.
Your job is to facilitate crawling, optimize for indexing and rank high.
Ranking factors
Content - Quality, relevance, length and keywords count. Backlinks - External links pointing to you are votes of confidence. User experience - Speed, mobile-friendliness and time on page are important. Domain authority - The age and overall popularity of the site play a role. Behavioral signals - Click-through rate, visit time and bounce are analyzed.
Optimize these factors to climb the rankings.
On-page SEO 🔺
Optimizations applied directly to your pages.
Title tags
The <title> tag is displayed in Google results. It's critical for ranking and clicks.
Optimal format: Main keyword | Secondary keyword | Brand.
Example: Women's running shoes Nike | Livraison Gratuite | RunShop
Length: 50 to 60 characters. Longer titles will be truncated with "...".
Yoast SEO plugin (free) for easy title editing. Each page and product must have a unique, optimized title.
Meta descriptions
This is the text displayed below the title in Google results. It doesn't influence ranking, but it does influence click-through rates.
Optimal format: An attractive summary of 150 to 160 characters, including the keyword and a call-to-action.
Example: `Discover our Nike women's running shoe collection. Performance, comfort, design. Free delivery from €50. Order now!
Yoast SEO lets you edit descriptions. Each page must have a unique description.
URLs (permalinks)
Bad: site.com/product?id=12345
Good: site.com/women-running-shoes-nike-pegasus
The URL must be descriptive, contain keywords and use hyphens (not underscores).
WordPress > Settings > Permalinks: Choose the "Item name" structure. WooCommerce generates clean URLs automatically.
Avoid changing established URLs (this breaks SEO). If necessary, redirect old URLs to new ones via 301 redirects.
Optimize product sheets 🔺
Products are the heart of your store and represent the number 1 SEO priority.
Product title
The title must include the brand, model and a key attribute.
Bad example: "Shoes" Good example : "Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40 - Chaussures Running Femme"
Google matches precise queries like "nike pegasus 40 femme". A precise title improves your ranking.
Product description
Minimum 300 words - Short descriptions get low rankings. Expand by detailing features, benefits and usage.
Natural keywords - Integrate search variants naturally without stuffing. For example "comfortable lightweight women's running shoes for marathon trail running".
Unique - NEVER copy supplier descriptions (duplicate content is penalized). Completely rewrite each description.
Well structured - Use H2/H3 subheadings, bulleted lists and short paragraphs. Human readability improves Google ranking.
Product images
Alt text - The alt attribute describes the image for Google (crawlers can't "see" images). For example "Nike Pegasus 40 women's shoe left profile view".
Yoast SEO helps you fill in the alt text when uploading. Each image must have a unique, descriptive alt.
File names - Use nike-pegasus-40-femme-bleu.jpg rather than IMG_1234.jpg. A descriptive file name helps image SEO.
Compression - Fast-loading images contribute to a fast site, which improves ranking (see Speed Optimization).
Customer reviews
Google displays star reviews in results (rich snippets). Attracts clicks +35%.
Collect reviews, display on product pages. Extensions like YITH WooCommerce Review for Discounts encourage reviews (discount if review).
Schema.org markup (Yoast adds auto) reports reviews to Google for star rating.
Structure and mesh 🔺
Site architecture impacts crawlability and ranking.
Category hierarchy
Home → Categories → Subcategories → Products
Example:
- Home
- Running Shoes
- Woman
- Nike Pegasus 40
- Men's
Limit yourself to a maximum of 3 to 4 depth levels. A deeper hierarchy makes crawling difficult and detracts from the user experience.
Internal linking
Links between site pages. Distributes authority, helps crawler discover content.
Similar products - WooCommerce auto-displays "Related products" at the end of the form.
Contextual links - Blog article "Guide chaussures running" linke to relevant products.
Breadcrumb trail - Home > Shoes > Running Women > Nike Pegasus. Navigation + SEO. Yoast generates automatically.
Descriptive anchors - "Discover our Nike Pegasus 40" vs "Click here". Descriptive anchor helps Google understand linked page.
Sitemap xml
File listing all site URLs to facilitate Google crawl.
Yoast SEO generates sitemaps automatically. Submit to Google Search Console :
- Search Console > Sitemaps
- Add
votresite.com/sitemap_index.xml. - Google crawls regularly
Pagination
Catalogs with more than 100 products require pagination. Tell Google not to index pages 2, 3, etc. to avoid duplicate content.
Yoast SEO handles this automatically via canonical tags. Pages 2 and following point to page 1 in canonical, so Google only indexes page 1.
Content and blog 🔺
Beyond products, editorial content attracts top-of-funnel traffic.
Integrated blog
Why create a blog? - Informational queries like "how to choose running shoes" represent a huge volume with less competition.
A 2000-word article such as "Guide Complet Chaussures Running 2025", which ranks 3rd in Google, can generate 500 visitors a month, or around 50 conversions a month.
Article themes :
- Buying guides ("How to choose X")
- Comparisons ("Nike Pegasus vs Adidas UltraBoost")
- Tutorials ("How to care for running shoes")
- Trends ("Top 10 running shoes 2025")
Frequency: 2-4 items/month minimum. Regularity > quantity.
Product links - Each article linke 3-5 relevant products. "We recommend Nike Pegasus 40 [link]".
Keyword search
Google Keyword Planner (free, Google Ads account required) - Monthly keyword search volume.
For example, the query "chaussures running femme" generates 10,000 searches per month in France. "Nike pegasus 40" generates 2,000 searches per month.
Target keywords:
- Sufficient volume (>100/month)
- Reasonable competition (avoid ultra-competitive if new)
- Commercial intent ("buy", "price", "delivery") vs. informational ("what is")
Ubersuggest, AnswerThePublic - Free keyword suggestion tools.
Article optimization
Same rules as products:
- H1 title with keyword
- Attractive meta description
- Clean URL
- Natural keywords in text
- Images with alt
- Internal links to products
Length: Between 1,500 and 2,500 words is the ideal sweet spot. Short articles (less than 500 words) rank poorly.
Technical SEO 🔺
Technical aspects influencing crawl and indexing.
Structured data (schema.org)
JSON-LD code describing content for Google. Displays rich snippets (star rating, price, availability).
Yoast WooCommerce SEO (paid extension $99/year) automatically adds schema products, reviews, prices.
Google then displays :
Nike Pegasus 40 - RunShop
★★★★★ 4,8 (127 reviews) - 129,99€ - In stock
Lightweight women's running shoes...
vs competitor without diagram :
Nike Pegasus 40 - Competitor
Lightweight women's running shoes...
Your result attracts 35% more clicks.
Mobile-first
Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. A non-mobile-friendly site gets a catastrophic ranking.
Test: Use the Google Mobile-Friendly Test available at search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly
Modern WooCommerce themes are responsive by default. Check them out anyway, especially the mobile checkout.
Https
SSL is mandatory. Google favors HTTPS sites. HTTP sites are penalized (see the Payment Security section).
Speed
Core Web Vitals have been an official ranking factor since 2025. A slow site will see its ranking drop (see the Speed Optimization section).
robots.txt file
Tells Google which pages to crawl/ignore.
WooCommerce generates robots.txt automatically. Check votresite.com/robots.txt.
Block useless pages: /checkout, /cart, /my-account (not indexable, waste crawl budget).
Yoast lets you edit robots.txt via interface.
Google search console
Free Google tool for monitoring SEO site health.
Setup :
- search.google.com/search-console
- Add property (domain)
- Check property (meta tag or DNS)
Use for :
- See traffic-generating keywords
- Detect indexing errors
- Submit sitemap
- Request re-indexing of modified pages
Check weekly.
