WooCommerce product types
WooCommerce offers five main product types, each tailored to specific needs. Choosing the right type from the start will save you time and avoid future complications. This guide will help you quickly identify which type to use depending on what you're selling.
In this chapter :

The simple product
This is the most common type, and the easiest to manage. A simple product has a single price, a single part number (SKU), and no variations such as size or color.
Imagine you're selling a book, a desk lamp, or a decorative accessory. These products have only one version, and can be configured in just a few minutes.
When to use a simple product?
A simple product is ideal when your item has no variation. A mug with a unique design, a poster of a fixed size, an accessory available in a single version - all these cases justify a simple product.
It's also the right choice for fixed-price services. A one-hour consultation, a one-off website audit, or a monthly subscription can all be sold as simple products.
Step-by-step configuration
To create a simple product, go to WooCommerce > Products > Add a product. You'll need to fill in the product name, a detailed description that helps your customers understand what they're buying, and of course the price. Don't forget to add a nice image - this is often what triggers the purchase.
In the "Product data" tab, select "Simple product". Here you'll find several important sections. The General tab allows you to set the regular price, and possibly a sale price if you're running a promotion. You can even program the start and end dates of sales to automate your promotions.
The Inventory tab deserves special attention. Assign a unique SKU code to each product - this makes management much easier as your catalog grows. Enable stock management so that WooCommerce automatically tracks your available quantities. You can also set a low stock threshold (e.g. 10 units) to receive an alert before a product is sold out.
For physical products, fill in the Shipping tab with weight and dimensions. This information enables automatic calculation of delivery charges according to your zones and shipping methods.
Variable product 🔺
The variable product is perfect when you sell the same item in several versions. A T-shirt available in different sizes and colors is a typical example. Instead of creating 20 separate products for each size-color combination, you create a single variable product with all its variations.
When to use a variable product?
As soon as your product is available in several versions that affect customer choice, think "variable". Shoes available in several sizes, a garment in different sizes or colors, a product offered in several capacities (32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB) - all these cases call for variations.
The major advantage: your customers see a single product, but can choose their preferred version. It also simplifies your management - only one product sheet to maintain, rather than dozens.
Detailed configuration
Setting up requires a few extra steps, but the result is well worth the effort. Start by creating your attributes in Products > Attributes. A "Size" attribute with the values S, M, L, XL and a "Color" attribute with Black, White, Blue for example.
These attributes are reusable - create them once and use them for all your relevant products. This is much more efficient than recreating the same options for each product.
Next, when creating your product, select the "Variable product" type. In the Attributes tab, add your previously created attributes and check "Used for variations". This box is important - without it, your attributes will only be informative, not selectable by the customer.
Once you've configured your attributes, move on to the Variations tab. The system can automatically generate all possible combinations. If you have 4 sizes and 3 colors, WooCommerce will create all 12 variations in one click. You'll then need to configure each variation individually: price, stock, SKU reference, and ideally a specific image showing that precise variation.
Time-saving tips
To save time, use group editing. Select several variations and set the same price for all at once. This is particularly useful if all your S and M sizes have the same price, while L and XL cost slightly more.
You can also set a default price at the main product level, and then modify only those variations that have a different price. Variations without a specific price will inherit the price of the parent product.
The bundled product 🔺
A grouped product allows you to sell several products together, while letting the customer choose the quantity of each item. This is different from a pack, where everything is sold together in a fixed amount.
Let's take the example of a "beginner's cooking kit" containing a saucepan, a frying pan and a spatula. With a packaged product, the customer can decide to buy two saucepans but only one frying pan, if he wishes. Each item retains its individual price, and the total is adjusted automatically.
Practical use cases
Bundled product shines in many situations. Starter kits where customers want to customize quantities, packs of complementary products, or themed collections where each item can be purchased in multiple copies.
It's also helpful in presenting a coherent range of products on a single page. A set of cosmetics, a collection of books by the same author, or an assortment of teas can be presented as a bundled product.
Simple configuration
To create a grouped product, select this type during creation. In the Grouped tab, search for and add the products that make up your kit. These products must already exist in your catalog as single products.
The advantage: you don't have to manage the stock of the grouped product itself. It's the stock of each product that counts. If your pan is out of stock, the kit will appear as partially available.
The affiliated product 🔺
The affiliate product is a bit special: you don't sell it directly. It's a product sold on another site (e.g., Amazon) for which you earn an affiliate commission. The "Add to cart" button becomes "Buy on Amazon" and redirects you to the partner site.
Why use affiliate products?
This type of product is practical if you want to recommend complementary products that you don't stock yourself, while still generating affiliate income. Do you sell cameras? Offer lenses or accessories as affiliates.
It's also a valuable way of expanding your catalog without the risk of overstocking. Testing a new market segment? Offer these products as affiliates before you decide to stock them yourself.
Quick setup
To set up an affiliate product, select this type and enter two main pieces of information: the URL of the product on the partner site, and the button text (e.g. "See on Amazon" or "Buy from our partner").
Don't forget to describe the product clearly, even if you're not selling it directly. Your visitors appreciate an honest and complete description that helps them decide whether to click through to the partner site.
The downloadable product 🔺
Digital products such as ebooks, software, music, e-learning or templates use this type. The big difference: no physical shipment is required. The customer receives a download link by email as soon as payment is confirmed.
Digital advantages
Digital products offer excellent margins - no physical stock, no shipping costs, instant delivery. It's also scalable: you can sell the same product thousands of times without restocking.
Protection and security
Simply check "Downloadable" when creating your product, then upload your file. You can limit the number of downloads (e.g., 3 times maximum) and set a link expiration date (30 days). This protects your content while offering reasonable flexibility to your customers.
Files are stored securely, and download links are unique and temporary. Customers can't share their link - each purchase generates a new, personal link.
Formats and sizes
WooCommerce accepts most file formats: PDF, ZIP, MP3, MP4, EPUB, etc. For large files (over 50 MB), consider hosting them on an external service such as Amazon S3 and providing a secure link.
Summary table 🔺
Simple Product corresponds to a single item sold at a single fixed price, with no variations or options. This type is ideal for books, one-of-a-kind accessories, or fixed-price services such as a consultation.
Variable Product allows you to offer several different versions of the same basic product. It's the ideal choice for clothing in various sizes and colors, or for electronic devices available in several storage capacities.
Grouped Product brings together several distinct products sold together on the same page, while leaving the customer free to choose the quantity of each item. This configuration works very well for customizable kits and thematic collections.
Affiliate Product automatically redirects the visitor to a partner site where the product is actually sold. You use this type to recommend complementary products to your range, or to test a new market segment without investing in stock.
Downloadable Product refers exclusively to dematerialized digital files. This category includes ebooks, software, online training, music files, and any content delivered by instant download.
Combine types 🔺
Note that a product can be both variable AND downloadable. For example, you sell an online training course available in "basic" and "premium" versions - this is a downloadable variable product.
Similarly, a simple product can be downloadable (a single ebook) or require shipping (a paper back). The types are not mutually exclusive in all cases.
Choosing the right type: questions to ask yourself 🔺
Before creating your product in WooCommerce, methodically go through these questions that will guide you to the most appropriate type:
First, ask yourself if your product comes in several different versions that the customer must choose from. If your item comes in several sizes, colors, materials or capacities, then you absolutely must opt for a Variable Product, which will allow customers to select their preference.
Next, consider the nature of your product: Is it a dematerialized digital file such as a PDF, software or video? In this case, simply activate the "Downloadable" option, which is perfectly compatible with the Simple and Variable types, depending on whether your digital product exists in one or several versions.
Ask yourself the following question: Do you really sell this product yourself from your shop? If the answer is no, and you simply wish to redirect your visitors to a partner site while earning a commission, then the Affiliate Product type is precisely what you need.
Also check whether you're offering a set of products where customers can freely adjust the quantities of each item. If you create a kit where the customer can choose to take two pans but only one frying pan, then Grouped Product is the natural choice.
Finally, if none of these special situations applies to you, simply opt for Single Product, which is the default choice for the vast majority of standard items with no options or variations.
Common mistakes to avoid 🔺
Don't create 10 separate single products for the same T-shirt in different sizes. Use a variable product instead. It'll simplify management, and your customers will appreciate finding everything on a single page.
Don't try to force the wrong type. If you sell customizable products (engraved name, personalized message), you'll need an extension like Product Add-Ons rather than trying to get around it with variations.
In a nutshell
WooCommerce offers five product types to suit all business needs: the simple product for standard items without options, the variable product for those with variations (sizes, colors, materials), the grouped product for selling lots or packs, the affiliate product for promoting external items with commission, and the downloadable product for digital goods (ebooks, software, training courses). Choose the appropriate type from the outset, as changing it later can complicate management. Combine types if necessary (downloadable product AND variable for different software versions). Master the specifics of each type (attributes for variables, shared inventory for grouped, external URL for affiliates) to exploit their full potential.
