Carriers and rates

Select the right logistics partners and configure an optimal pricing structure for your WooCommerce online store.

In this chapter :

WooCommerce Guide - Carriers

Key statistics - 68% of customers want real-time parcel tracking. 48% give up if delivery time >5 days. The choice of carrier has a direct impact on customer satisfaction and conversion rates.

Choose your carriers

The carrier is your critical logistics partner. The wrong choice means unhappy customers and skyrocketing costs.

Selection criteria

Reliability - On-time delivery rate must exceed 95%. Less than 1% of packages must be lost or damaged. Consult merchant reviews (Trustpilot, e-commerce forums).

Rates - They must be competitive, but not the only criterion. The cheapest carrier who delivers 50% of parcels late is a disaster, despite the savings.

Geographic coverage - Do they deliver wherever you sell? France, DOM-TOM, international?

Delivery times - 24-48h in France is the expected standard. 3-5 days is acceptable if you communicate it clearly. Beyond 7 days, the customer gives up.

Services - Do they offer real-time tracking, signature, insurance, Saturday delivery, cash on delivery?

WooCommerce integration - Do they have an API or official plugin to automate tags, tracking and notifications?

Support - Are they easy to reach when there's a problem (lost parcel, unhappy customer)? Is support in English or French?

Tests and comparison

Before making any commitment, test 3 to 5 carriers with real shipments.

  1. Order from a competitor using carrier X
  2. Observe the customer experience: lead time, packaging on arrival, tracking and communication.
  3. Time advertised vs. actual delivery times
  4. Note package reliability and condition

Sign up for test programs (often free for first shipments). Send parcels to friends and family in different regions.

Compare results over 3 months before making a final decision. The rate on paper does not necessarily reflect performance in the field.

Carriers france 🔺

Here's an overview of the major players in the French market.

La poste / colissimo

This is the historical leader. It offers total coverage of France (mainland + DOM-TOM + international).

  • The confidence of a public brand
  • Reasonable prices (from €5 for France with less than 500g)
  • Colissimo Domicile (48-72h) or Colissimo Point Retrait (post office)

Disadvantages :

  • Quality of service is variable (overcrowded offices, sometimes unpleasant staff)
  • Tracking is basic (updates are rare)
  • Deadlines sometimes not met (strikes, Christmas peaks)

Rates (individuals, professional discounts) :

  • <250g France: €5.50
  • 250-500g : 7€
  • 500-1kg: €8.50

  • 1-2kg: €15.90
  • 2-5kg: €19.90

Usage: Premium option for customers in a hurry. "24h express delivery +9€" in addition to standard Colissimo.

Niche: last-minute gifts, urgent spare parts.

Dhl / fedex / ups

International carriers. Worldwide express, premium tracking.

Advantages :

  • Global network
  • Short international lead times (3-5 days intercontinental)
  • Full tracking
  • Managed customs

Disadvantages :

  • Very expensive (30-100€+ international)
  • Overkill for France (use Colissimo)

Variable rates - Depends on weight, destination, urgency. Quote via business account.

Usage: International deliveries only (non-EU Europe, America, Asia). France = oversized.

Private parcel / parcel relay

Economical alternatives. Independent relay points (shops, lockers).

Advantages :

  • Cheaper than Colissimo
  • 15000+ relay points in France
  • Good value for money

Disadvantages :

  • Lesser awareness (customers know less)
  • Less dense network than Mondial Relay

Prices :

  • <1kg France: €4.50
  • 1-5kg: €6
  • 5-10kg: €8.50

Plugin: "Colis Privé for WooCommerce".

Relevant if Mondial Relay/Colissimo insufficient. Give it a try.

Price configuration 🔺

Different pricing strategies depending on business model.

Fixed rate

One price for all orders. "Delivery €6.90 anywhere in France".

Benefits :

  • Customer simplicity (total transparency)
  • Predictability of shipping revenues

Disadvantages :

  • Loser on small, light parcels (charge €6.90 to send €3)
  • Also loses on large, heavy parcels (charge €6.90 to send €15)

WooCommerce configuration :

  • Zone > Method > "Flat rate
  • Cost: €6.90

Optimal if: Products of the same weight/size. Jewelry, cosmetics, small items = fixed price works.

Tariff by weight

Price calculated according to basket weight. 0-500g = €5, 500g-1kg = €7, 1-2kg = €9, etc.

Advantages :

  • Fair (customer pays proportionally)
  • Covered on large parcels

Disadvantages :

  • Customer doesn't know exact price before basket (add products, weight goes up, price goes up)
  • Complex configuration (multiple slices)

Configuration :

  • Extension WooCommerce Weight Based Shipping ($30/year)
  • Define weight/price ranges

Optimal if: Very variable product weights. Bookstore (200g book vs 5kg boxed set), electronics.

Price per order value

Price according to basket value. <50€ = 8€, 50-100€ = 6€, >100€ = free.

Benefits :

  • Incentive to increase basket size (to reduce/eliminate costs).
  • Psychologically accepted (large purchase = lower proportion of postage)

Disadvantages :

  • Not correlated with real cost (basket 90€ feathers vs 90€ bricks)

Configuration:

  • Extension WooCommerce Advanced Shipping (free)
  • Conditional rules

Optimal if: Products of similar weight, variable prices. Fashion, home decor.

Conditional free delivery

Free if threshold reached, otherwise chargeable.

Configuration :

  • Free delivery" method: minimum order €80
  • Colissimo" method: €6.90 if <€80

Customer <80€ sees "Colissimo 6,90€". ≥80€ sees "Livraison gratuite 0€".

Dynamic shopping cart message: "15€ left for free delivery!" = purchase push.

Optimal threshold: Current average basket × 1.2 to 1.3.

If average basket 60€, threshold 75-80€ encourages addition of product to unlock free delivery.

Real-time carrier prices

Carrier API calculates exact price by weight/destination.

WooCommerce Shipping (official extension, free) connects USPS, UPS, DHL, etc.

Customer enters address, API calls carrier, returns actual price: "Colissimo €8.45" or "Chronopost €13.20".

Advantages :

  • Price to the nearest cent (no loss)
  • Transparent for customer

Disadvantages :

  • Technical configuration (API keys)
  • Dependent on API availability (failure = checkout blocked)

Optimal if: Complex international, highly variable weights/destinations.

Package tracking 🔺

68% customers want tracking. Without = anxiety, overwhelmed after-sales service "where's my parcel?".

Tracking number

Each carrier provides a unique tracking number.

Colissimo : 2-letter + 9-digit + 2-letter format (ex: 6A12345678FR)

Mondial Relay : 11 digits (ex: 12345678901)

Chronopost: Similar to Colissimo

Retrieve via carrier interface when generating label. Copy into WooCommerce order.

Automated tracking

Carrier plugins (Colissimo Officiel, Mondial Relay for WooCommerce) generate and insert tracking automatically.

Workflow :

  1. Order "Processing
  2. Click "Generate label" (plugin)
  3. PDF label downloaded, tracking inserted order
  4. Change status to "Completed
  5. Customer self-sent email with tracking

Zero manual copy-paste. Save hours on volume.

Email with tracking

Order shipped" email template (WooCommerce > Emails > Order completed) includes :

"Your order #123 has been shipped!

Tracking number : [tracking_number] Track your package : [lien_tracking]

Estimated delivery: [date]"

Tracking links :

  • Colissimo: https://www.laposte.fr/outils/suivre-vos-envois?code=[tracking]
  • Mondial Relay**: https://www.mondialrelay.fr/suivi-de-colis/?numeroExpedition=[tracking]

Plugin generates link automatically.

Real-time notifications

Advanced Extensions (TrackShip, $9/month) send SMS/email notifications steps :

  • "Parcel picked up by carrier"
  • In transit
  • In delivery
  • "Delivered"

Reassured customer, less need for after-sales service.

Returns management 🔺

Clear returns policy = customer confidence. Poor management = negative feedback.

Returns policy

Legal deadline France/EU: 14 days for retraction without justification (distance selling).

Beyond legal, define your rules :

30-day money-back guarantee - Generous, reassures hesitant customers, boosts conversions. Cost: 5-10% returns.

14 days strict - Legal minimum. Saves on returns logistics.

Exceptions - Personalized products, underwear, sealed products (hygiene) = legally non-returnable.

Make your policy clear: "Returns" footer, FAQ, dedicated page.

Return process

  1. Customer request - Email/contact form. Check lead time, product status.
  2. Generate label - If accepted, provide prepaid return label OR customer pays return.
  3. Product receipt - Check condition, conformity.
  4. Refund - 14 days max legal after receipt. Stripe/PayPal: 1-click "Refund" button.

**Who pays for return?

  • Product defect/shop error: you pay
  • Change of customer opinion: customer pays (except "free return" marketing policy)

Extensions for returns management

WooCommerce Returns and Warranty Requests ($79/year) - Returns form, admin workflow (accept/refuse), label generation, status tracking.

YITH WooCommerce RMA (free basic) - Return Merchandise Authorization. Customer request via account area, you process.

Automates, reduces manual emails, professionalizes process.

Reduce return rates

Accurate descriptions - Multiple-angle photos, exact dimensions, demo videos. Fewer surprises = fewer returns.

Sizing guide - Fashion: detailed sizing chart. "How to measure" with visuals.

Customer reviews - Real customer photos show product in situ. Reduces the gap between expectation and reality.

Pre-purchase chat - Customer hesitates about size/color? Chat answers, confirms choice. Avoids risky orders and returns.

Benchmark return rate: 5-15% depending on sector. Fashion 20%, electronics 5%. Aim for low end of range.

Cost optimization 🔺

Logistics = 10-20% sales. Optimize = thousands of euros saved annually.

Carrier negotiation

Volume - From 100 shipments/month, negotiate rates.

Contact Colissimo/Mondial Relay sales: "I ship 150 parcels/month. What discounts are available?

Get -10% to -30% depending on volume. 150 parcels × €6 × 12 months = €10,800/year. -20% discount = €2160 in savings**.

Annual contract - Annual volume commitment (1000+ parcels) = aggressive discounts. But penalties if not met.

Multi-carrier comparators

Sendcloud (15€/month + commission) - Connects 80+ carriers. Upload orders, compare rates in real time, choose cheapest automatically, generate labels.

Savings: 15-25% vs single carrier. Fast ROI if >50 shipments/month.

Boxtal - Similar. Comparator + grouped rate negotiation (mutualizes customer volumes).

Optimized packaging

Volumetric weight recall: L×W×H (cm) / 5000.

Oversized carton 40×30×25 for product 10×10×5 = waste.

Standardize 3-4 product-specific carton sizes. Investment in customized cartons quickly pays for itself.

Lightweight packing - Crumpled kraft paper vs. polystyrene chips. Same protection, -50% weight.

Massification of shipments

Group daily orders, drop-off single lot carrier.

Time savings (1 trip vs. 10) + reduced rates (collection >20 parcels).

5pm drop-off every day = routine. Orders before 4pm = same-day dispatch.

In a nutshell

Choose your carriers according to your target and your products: Colissimo for versatility, Chronopost for speed, Mondial Relay for small budgets. Negotiate professional rates with your carriers based on your monthly volumes. Integrate tracking APIs to automatically send tracking numbers to customers. Offer multiple delivery options (standard, express, relay point) to give customers a choice. Efficiently manage logistical returns by defining who pays the costs and how packages are handled. Insure your shipments for high-value products (recommended threshold: €100).
