Structure your WooCommerce online store shipping zones to optimize logistics and pricing based on geography.

In this chapter :

WooCommerce Guide - Shipping zones

Key statistic - 55% of shopping cart abandonments are caused by unexpectedly high delivery charges. An optimized price zone strategy reduces these abandonments by 30%.

Understanding zones

Shipping zones define where you deliver and which rates/methods apply depending on the destination.

What is a zone?

It's a geographical grouping (countries, regions, postal codes) that shares the same delivery rules.

Example of a typical French store:

  • Zone 1: Metropolitan France - 48-hour delivery with Colissimo + Chronopost
  • Zone 2: French overseas departments and territories** - Delivery in 7-10 days with a surcharge
  • Zone 3: Europe** - Delivery in 5-7 days with weight-based rates
  • Zone 4 : Rest of the world - Delivery in 10-15 days with higher rates

Each zone has its own rates, methods and delivery times.

Why structure by zone?

Variable logistics costs - Delivering to Paris costs €5, delivering to Guadeloupe costs €25, delivering to Canada costs €40. Without zones, you lose money or overcharge certain customers.

Realistic delivery times - Promising 48 hours for France is feasible. Promising 48 hours for Japan is impossible and leads to customer disappointment.

Adapted methods - Colissimo works well in France. For international deliveries, Colissimo is not suitable; DHL or FedEx are required.

Zones allow us to personalize the shipping experience by geography, improving customer satisfaction and profitability.

Zone configuration 🔺

WooCommerce manages zones natively via an intuitive interface.

Access zones

The WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping menu displays the "Shipping Zones" tab.

By default, there is a "Everywhere else" zone that serves as a catch-all for destinations not covered by specific zones.

Click on "Add a shipping zone " to create your first zone.

Create a zone

Zone name - Internal description. Examples: "Metropolitan France", "European Union", "North America".

Zone regions - This defines the geography covered. Here are the options:

  • Whole country - Type "France" and select to cover all of France.
  • Region/State** - France > Île-de-France OR USA > California
  • Postcodes - France 75 (all of Paris), 13 (Bouches-du-Rhône)
  • Continents** - Europe, Asia, North America

You can add more than one region to a zone. "Europe" = France + Germany + Italy + Spain...

Shipping methods - Once the zone has been defined, add the available shipping methods (Flat rate, Free shipping, Local pickup). This will be detailed in the next section.

Priority order - Zones are applied according to their order. A specific zone (Paris 75*) is applied before a generic zone (France). Reorder them via drag-and-drop.

Practical example: boutique france

Zone 1: Île-de-France (75*, 77, 78, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95) - 24h express delivery (Chronopost) - Free in-store pickup (if physical boutique) - Fixed price €5

Zone 2: Metropolitan France (except Zone 1) - Colissimo 48-72h - Mondial Relay 3-5 days (economical) - Rate €6.90 Colissimo, €4.50 Mondial Relay

Zone 3: Corsica (20*) - Colissimo only (not Mondial Relay) - Delivery time 4-6 days - Rate 12€ (island cost)

Zone 4: DOM-TOM (French overseas departments and territories) - Colissimo Overseas - Delivery time 7-10 days - Rate by weight (15-50€)

**Zone 5: European Union - DHL or Colissimo International - Delay 5-7 days - Price per weight (12-80€)

Zone 6: Rest of the World DHL Express only - DHL Express only - Delivery time 7-14 days - Price per weight (€25-150)

This structure covers 95% of cases, fair rates, realistic lead times.

Multi-zone strategies 🔺

Different approaches depending on your business model.

Local only (local delivery)

Deliver only within a 50-100km radius. Small shops, fresh produce, bulky furniture.

Benefits :

  • Low, predictable costs
  • Fast delivery (24h)
  • Personalized service available (hand delivery)

Configuration :

  • Single zone: local postal codes (e.g. 75, 92, 93, 94)
  • Method: "Local delivery" €5 fixed or free for orders over €50

Disadvantage: Limited market, capped growth potential.

Relevant: bakeries, florists, made-to-measure furniture.

National only

Deliver nationwide, not internationally. Avoids customs/tax/delivery complexities.

Benefits :

  • Simple logistics (one national carrier)
  • No customs/taxes
  • Easy communication (one language)

Configuration :

  • Zone 1: Metropolitan France
  • Zone 2: DOM-TOM (optional, complex)
  • Methods: Colissimo, Mondial Relay, Chronopost

70% French stores start national. International expansion once growth has stabilized.

International multi-zone

Worldwide delivery with rates/methods by region.

Benefits :

  • Global market = unlimited growth
  • Geographic diversification

Disadvantages :

  • Complex logistics
  • Customs/taxes (customer pays on receipt = unpleasant surprise)
  • Multilingual support
  • Complicated returns (prohibitively expensive)

Typical configuration :

  • Zone 1: Country of origin (France)
  • Zone 2: EU Europe (no customs)
  • Zone 3 : Non-EU Europe (Switzerland, UK, Norway)
  • Zone 4 : North America
  • Zone 5: Asia/Oceania
  • Zone 6 : Rest

Each zone = adapted carrier (DHL/FedEx international), rates by weight.

Free strategic delivery

Conditional free delivery boosts conversions but reduces margin if poorly calibrated.

Optimal threshold = 20-30% above current average basket.

Average basket €60? Free threshold €80. Customer at €65 adds €15 product to unlock = +25% basket, you cover shipping costs (€6) and earn €9 margin.

Configuration :

  • Zone France: "Free delivery" if order ≥ 80€ AND "Colissimo" 6,90€ if <80€.
  • Dynamic shopping cart message: "Add 15€ for free shipping!" (WooCommerce Free Shipping extension displayed automatically)

Test thresholds: 50€, 70€, 100€. Measure average basket impact vs. delivery cost.

Exclusions and restrictions 🔺

Some products/destinations require special rules.

Non-shippable products

Dangerous products (lithium batteries, aerosols), perishable products (fresh food), regulated products (alcohol, medicines).

Geographical restrictions - Alcohol available in France but not in Muslim countries. Configure customized shipping class by product.

Product > Shipping > Shipping class : "Alcohol". Create zone excluding this class for prohibited destinations.

Alternative: In-store pickup only for complex products.

Non-delivery zones

Geographically difficult or unprofitable areas.

Islands/DOM-TOM - Prohibitive cost (€50 shipping on €30 product = unsaleable). Either exclude, or realistic price (customer assumes).

Unstable countries - Frequent lost parcels, corrupt customs. Better to exclude than to manage disputes.

Configuration : Do not create zone for these destinations. "Everywhere else" displays "No delivery method available for this address" at checkout.

Weight/size limits

Carrier refuses parcels >30kg or >1.5m in length.

Shipping classes - Heavy/bulky products: "Bulky" class. Zone with "Specialized carrier" method (pallet, courier).

Validation checkout - WooCommerce Weight Based Shipping extension blocks checkout if basket exceeds limits, suggests split order or store pickup.

Exceptional lead times

Christmas, sales, carrier strikes extend lead times.

Notification checkout - Display message: "High activity period: lead times +2-3 days". Manage waits, reduce after-sales service.

WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Options : custom text field displays checkout.

Logistics optimization 🔺

Configure zones, optimize operations for maximum efficiency.

Order consolidation

Customer orders Monday 10am (product A) then Monday 4pm (product B).

Consolidate - Ship together on Tuesday. Save one shipment (6€) + green (less parcels).

Extension WooCommerce Order Consolidation detects multiple orders from the same customer 24 hours a day, suggest merge.

Communication - Email: "We've consolidated your orders #123 and #124 for a single delivery on Tuesday". Customer happy (efficient) + you save.

Packaging optimization

Standardized parcels - 3-4 fixed sizes (S, M, L, XL). Negotiate volume rates with carrier. Bulk carton purchase = -40% vs one-off purchases.

Volumetric weight - Carriers charge actual weight OR volumetric weight (L×W×H/5000), whichever is greater. Carton too big for small product = overcharging.

Example: 500g product in 40×30×20 carton = volumetric weight 24000/5000 = 4.8kg invoiced vs. 0.5kg actual. Cost ×10!

Adjusted carton 20×15×10 = 3000/5000 = 0.6kg invoiced. Massive savings.

Daily group deposit

Carriers offer daily collection if sufficient volume (>20 parcels/day).

Advantages :

  • Time savings (vs. outbound delivery for each order)
  • Negotiated rates (volume)
  • Centralized tracking

Relevant if >100 orders/month.

Zone performance analysis

WooCommerce Reports - Export orders, analyze by zone:

  • Most profitable zone (sales - shipping costs)
  • Area with the most abandonments (costs too high?)
  • Area with highest customer service? (lost parcels/delays)

Optimize problem areas or exclude unprofitable ones.

In a nutshell

Shipping zones allow you to apply different rates depending on the customer's destination. Create at least 3 zones: Metropolitan France, European Union and Rest of World. Define delivery methods adapted to each zone, with rates consistent with your actual costs. Offer conditional free delivery (from €50-75) to increase the average basket. Test your zones with different addresses (Paris, Marseille, Corsica, DOM-TOM, Germany) to check calculations. Clearly display delivery times to manage customer expectations and reduce support requests.
